Described as “magnetic … impressive” (Houston Chronicle), “The marimba played by Nunoya can sing” (Klassik Heute), marimbist Fumito Nunoya is gaining recognition internationally as one of today’s leading marimbists for his lyricism and deep musical expressions. Besides commissioning and premiering numerous new works for marimba he loves to create unique programs including adaptations of classical music by Bach and Piazzolla as well as film music or even popular songs for which he received acclaim by audiences, critics and media. Born in Akita, Japan, he currently lives in Herford, Germany.

Mr. Nunoya has released 5 CDs. The latest CD Concertos on Marimba released from Oehms Classics in 2019 was chosen for German airline Lufthansa’s in-flight entertainment. This CD has also been played through radio stations in Europe and received the Gouden Label award from Klassiek Centraal in Belgium. His 3rd CD Piazzolla on Marimba released from Oehms Classics was claimed as “…true masterpiece…” by Percussive Arts Society magazine. Mr. Nunoya won the First Prize at the Ima Hogg Artists Competition in USA, at the 3rd Libertango International Competition in Italy (centered on the music of Astor Piazzolla) and Third Prize at the 3rd World Marimba Competition in Germany. Mr. Nunoya has been invited to many international marimba/percussion festivals in USA, Europe, Japan and as a soloist, he has performed with orchestras including Houston Symphony and Eastern Connecticut Symphony (USA), Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra (Japan) and OWL Kammerphilharmonie Minden (Germany).

Fumito Nunoya began playing the piano at age seven, and marimba as well as other percussion at age thirteen. He graduated from Yamagata University (Japan) with a degree in Music Education, and Master of Music and Artist Diploma degrees in marimba performance from the Boston Conservatory (USA). He was the first marimba (or percussion) major in the school’s history to receive the later distinction on full scholarship. His teachers include marimbists Nancy Zeltsman and Nanae Mimura. In addition, he studied the marimba with pianists including Dr. Karl Paulnack, and Kiyomi Takeda who also deeply influenced his music making.

Mr. Nunoya is currently Adams Marimba Artist and his signature marimba mallets will be available from Pearl/Adams Japan in 2021. He is also a sightseeing ambassador of Odate, Akita, his hometown. Besides performing he has been teaching marimba at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold in Germany since 2009 and was also a guest marimba instructor at Kyoto City University of Arts, Japan, and ArtEZ University of the Arts in Zwolle, Netherlands.
