Born in Guapi – Colombia, he has dedicated his musical career to spreading music from Colombia ́s Pacific coast. He has focused on the investigation, creation, and production of this music. He’s also a composer, arranger, saxophonist, marimbero and musical director. He studied at Instituto Popular de Cultura, Conservatorio Antonio María Valencia and Escuela de música of the Universidad del Valle.

As the director of Grupo Bahía he has taken this music around the world. He has also participated as guest musician with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Valle directed by Francisco Zumaque and La Sinfónica en Salsa de Currulao directed by Paul Dury where he was the arranger along Félix Darío Morgan. Parallel to this activities, Hugo Candelario has been teaching at Instituto Popular de Cultura, Instituto Departamental de Bellas Artes, Secretaría de Cultura de Cali and some other institutes and universities in Colombia.
In august 2015, he participated in the XIX Festival de música del Pacífico Petronio Álvarez as musical director.
